"Intro to Poetry"

What is your personal relationship to poetry at this time?  Do you like it?  Why or why not?  Do you read it except when it is assigned for a class?  What is your favorite poem?  Why that one?  Is there anything you would like to know about poetry?

  1. Ohh poetry. I don't mind it at all! It's always entertaining to read it but it's exhausting to interpret and find the underlined meanings...It's so much of a hassle. A writer should write straight and to the point what they want you to get out of a poem. When I was in 5th or 6th grade we had to journal everyday and I wrote a poem. I read it for the class and my teacher told me to enter it in some kind of poetry contest. Little did I know, it acutally wasn't that bad and got published in a studen poetry book. It was about wishes and the rhyme made it so catchy. I still brag about it to this day! I love Edgar Allan Poe and I have a book of his entire life's work. It's hard to understand but I do enjoy reading it when I have free time. My favorite poem is "The Raven" of course! I also like this poem we read last year in Brit Lit but for the life of me I can't remember what it was called...It was about death and the speaker said not to cry when they die because they are on to big and better things beyond the horizon. It was very inspirational. As far as wanting to know more about poetry I can't think of anything right now...I just like poems because they're like the free spirit of literature. There's no exact way it has to be!

  2. Depending on the particular poem, i usually like most of them. They are basically word puzzles and I like trying to break them down and figure out what they were supposed to mean, or what I think it means. I don't go out and buy books of poetry or spend my time on the internet looking for poems, but when I find a random one here or there I'll read it. And my favorite poem would probably have to be the Fuzzy Chair poem, I hear the author of it is a pretty cool dude.
The only thing I would like to know is a legit website for poems. I dont trust where Google leads me anymore

  3. I would have to say that I rather like poetry but like Kevin, I don't go hunting for it, I mostly just read it when we have it in class. I would like to read more of it though! I think my favorite poem would be "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost because I find it inspirational. At this point, I don't have any questions about poetry.

  4. Poetry! Oh I do love me some poetry, but the problem with it is whenever I've been in a class and it's time to learn about poetry I absolutely dread it. It's SO HARD for me to read a poem and break it apart and analyze it to find out why the author put a common there and why he chose that many stanzas and that certain rhyme pattern. I feel like poetry's vibe is too chill to sit and break it apart, its like taking a free bird and clipping its wings (lame comparison). I've just always felt that poetry is something more for enjoyment and readers satisfaction. If you read a poem and like it, then that's awesome and take what you will from it. I usually don't think its necessary to break down every little thing, I think it takes away from the free spirit of poetry. Anyways, I really like Robert Frost and one of my favorites is "Tree At My Window" I like it because it's like no matter what struggles you're going through there is always someone or in this case something (a tree) who is going through the same thing and can be with you. Also, randomly one of the all state choir songs has the lyrics to his poem "Choose Something Like a Star" and I just really like the way its written. As for poetry questions I've just never really understood what makes poetry "good" poetry. I feel like it all has to depend on the reader and their life. Some poem that I might really love because I can connect with it might mean absolutely nothing to another person because they can't. So how do you weed out the good and the bad?

  5. To be blunt, I do not like poetry. I'm all about being straightforward and having no guessing games and I feel like poetry doesn't fall into these guidelines. I agree with the other people who have already commented that breaking poems apart and deeply analyzing them takes away the enjoyable aspect to some extent. I would say that I generally never read poetry outside of a classroom setting....I just don't enjoy it enough to want to spend my time reading it. I'd much rather use the time to read a novel that has a storyline that's all spelled out for me so I don't have to go searching for the answers.

  6. 1. I am very angry at bloggspot.
    2. this is the 15th (yes, i counted) time I have logged in.
    3. This is the 2nd time i'm writing an ENTIRE POST ABOUT POETRY!
    4. I'm extremely frustrated right now.
    5. I may...or not...most likely the former, had a mini breakdown and cried to my moma for 10 minutes about this (it's called the guilt card, and I.am.playing.it.)

So, onward. Poetry. To be short, I really only like fun poetry for the most part. I don't like thinking about things to much. (That really makes me sound great eh?) I'll rephrase; I like rhyming poetry that is fun, and I don't have to think about double meanings. I'm not a big fan of all other forms of poetry... I can hardly believe that an author really thinks about all the indepth things people read into poems. Probably because when I write a poem I write cheeky rhymes or haiku's (something I am really quite talented at--if I do say so myself) And I can't quite wrap my head around the thought of someone picking out each individual word so carefully; most likely because that's just not how I work. My favorite poem? Well that's easy. My mama taught me this when I was probably three years old:
"I eat my peas with honey,
    I've done it all my life;
It makes the peas taste funny,
But it keeps them on my knife."

    Pure.Literary.Genius.

p.s. I apologize for the slight..umm...for lack of a better word, tantrum, I held at the beginning of this post. But I can't bring myself to delete it, I am very proud of this angry list, and therfore will let it cyberly live.

  7. Well, I LOVE poetry. I am super cheesy so poetry, song lyrics, quotes and even the occasional greeting cards make me all excited. Some of the ones I have been assigned to read kind of leave me confused. But there are some that just strike me and really keep me thinking for a while, which is what I like so much! I like the long, emotional ones and the short, little, goofy ones as well. I could not put my finger on one certain poem that I would call my favorite. But I am very excited to keep reading more and more the next few days in class!!

  8. Honestly I've never been a huge fan of poetry. Even so, I do sometimes find myself in a book or collection of poetry, just to relax and get away from everyday life. But reading poetry seems to be a very seldom happening in my life. Whether it be Robert Frost or just Dr. Seuss, I tend to steer towards authors I'm familiar with, which is something I'm trying to stop. Also, I usually read, when I read, rhyming poetry when I have I choice. Poetry that rhymes id much more exciting and interesting to me, and oftentimes keeps my attention. Anyway, poetry may not a a cornerstone in my life, but when I have the chance, I very much enjoy it.

  9. I don't really care either way with poetry. I never read it specifically but if I happen to or have to I like it most of the time unless it's really annoying and confusing and I have to waste time thinking about what it COULD mean. I think its kind of pointless because there are so many ways one poem can be interpreted that you don't know if you're even making sense. I don't have a favorite poem or poet either. I want to know what makes a poem a poem like some poems look like they're just random words/sentences and its weird.

  10. Here we go for the 20th time overall, and 4th time today, if this doesn't work i will probably freak out. So poetry, though not my favorite way to pass the time once in a while i may give it a whirl. Other than those random times the only time i do read it is when assigned. One thing i don't like about poetry is that so many meanings can be interpreted from them; why not have a little note at the end that says exactly what the author had in mind. Maybe the author wanted his work to be disected to the point where every word and punctuation mark means something; or maybe he or she had a funny thought and the wanted to share it and happend to put in poem form. That is one thing i don't like, and sometimes in class ist kills the poem for me. My favorite poems are the ones we read in elementary school. The ones that rhyme and make laugh and feel good inside. Those right there are the goodies.

"crossing my fingers, lets hope this works"

  11. Aside from song lyrics, poetry has never really been a huge part of my life. I don't ever really go out of my way to find a poem, unless it for schoolwork. Also, I have to agree with the previous commenters. Breaking down and analyzing poems takes the fun out of the poem itslef. However, I do enjoy scoping out symbolism and meaning of any literary work, including poetry.
The only poetry (aside from song lyrics) I have really ever enjoyed is the work of Dr. Seuss. Each piece is original, fun and unpredictable.
