Reflection on Poetry

Think back on the last few weeks and our study of poetry.

What have you learned about poetry?

Do you think it is easier now to develop your own interpretation of a poem?  Why?  What helped the most?

Look back on the last blog post ("Intro to Poetry") and see if there is anything you'd like to add to your response.

  1. I've learned a little bit more about poetry. I realize that it's a lot more than just some lines thrown together that are made to be confusing. I acutally like limericks and sonnets are my favorite kinds of poems too. I'm a bit shaky as far as meter and stressed or unstressed syllables are concerned....It's easier to develeope a better understanding of a poem. A limerick is meant to be funny, while a hakui is about nature. To look at a poem and see how it's formatted, that helps me figure out the underlined meaning or the point that is trying to be made. So based on that it's easier for me. I just wish poems weren't so confusing sometimes...

  2. During the last couple of weeks I think I've gained more insight to poetry than I thought possible. Honestly, before we started studying poetry, it could barely grab my attention, for the most part. I just figured it was what an author did when wanting to rhyme and be clever. Or just what a person would write to gain literary praise for something other than free verse. I had no idea about all of the different closed forms, and how interesting they can be. Whether it's a double dactyl, an Italian sonnet, or a simple limerick, poetry has become much more, well, exciting to me. I think learning about all these different forms really helped with showing me how to interpret, or analyze a piece of poetry. Although I'm sure I have a lot still to learn about poetry, I think I've gained a crazy amount from the last couple weeks in class.

  3. I thought learning about poetry was pretty darn successful. I liked learning about the different types and how they are arranged although like Jenny I think the unstressed and stressed syllables are still kind of difficult. But I think writing them seems kind of fun because it's more of a challenge. As for interpretation I definitely feel more confident in my abilities. I feel like just being told to read poetry really helped with it. To me, it seemed like the more I was exposed to the different types the easier it was for me to figure it all out.

  4. I've learned a few new things about poetry. We took a deeper look at meter and types of poetry than I had in previous classes. I think that I am capable of coming up with my own interpretation of a poem, but poetry is one of those things that always makes me second guess myself. While some of the poetry we read was fun and entertaining, I'm still not too crazy about it.

  5. Well I guess I learned and actually memorized more of the forms and classifications of poetry, which kind of helps when I'm trying to interpret it. What helped the most was re-reading it and trying to figure out a ulterior meaning for the words. Or something along those lines.
I cant really recall much right now, because I spent most of my weekend doing mindless drills at the Army Reserves. But I got paid for it, so it was pretty much the easiest money ive ever made.
Besides that, poetry is pretty neat. I like it

  6. I suppose it's been a succesful couple of weeks. I learned alot about reading poems that I can already say has made a difference--I always thought poets were just really weird that's why the had jagged little lines and stanzas and what nots. I also learned the names of certain poems, which is just good to know for future reference. With understanding poems...I think the most helpful things I've gotton are a)people bring their own experiences into an interpretation. and b)reading aloud always helps.

  7. Over the course of our study of poetry, I feel like I have learned a lot. I still am awful at the unstressed/stressed syllable concept but with practice and more reading, I'm sure I could improve. I feel more capable to interpret poetry. One thing I really like is all the different possibilities with it--writing forms and interpretation. Its a super cool form of literature and I really enjoyed our study of it.

  8. One thing i learned about poetry is that it doesn't need to be a certain way and fit into a template. Concrete poetry is definitely my favorite because it uses my imagination to make a picture. i have also learned how to interpret poems better, now i don't just look at surface i go down deeper. Learning different kinds will surely help in college. Poetry is still a little far down on my list of ways to read/write literature.

  9. I feel as though I have learned quite a bit more about poetry. I like how there are so many different ways to compose a poem, and there are nearly no limits as to what you can or cannot do. It's also interesting how many different interpretations there can be for one poem. Overall, I enjoyed learning more about poetry.

  10. These last few weeks I have definitely learned A LOT. Taking time to really analyze a poem and get a deeper meaning then just reading the words on the page it is a very cool skill to have! Being able to take a look at several types of poetry (whether I liked them or not) helped me to get a better sense of appreciation for poetry. Also attending the writing festival helped make this a very enjoyable topic for me to learn about. :)

  11. I guess I learned a few new things about poetry such as double dactyls but as I write about them I can't even remember what they are. I just don't like analyzing poetry or anything so maybe that's why I don't remember much. I do have more of a respect for poetry writers because it's definitely hard to follow the strict regulations for each type of poem.
